Watches

Some would say that early Egyptians were the first to generate a mechanical way of measuring time by the flow of jogging water. The earliest accurate clocks were built by monks in France to basically tell you what time to pray. Theses clocks told time audibly with bells & had no hand indicators.

Before watches, there were clocks. Before clocks, there was basically mechanism to tell & measure time. Sundials told time by shadows. Hourglasses measured time by predictable rates of sand moving through a narrow channel.

In the 1700’s, Queen Anne of England wanted to extend her vast maritime power & offered a large reward of 20,000 pounds for anyone who invented something that reliably calculated longitude.

In the 16th century pocket watches were invented in Tudor, England. The watches were amazingly sizable & were generally worn around the neck because of their girth. It is rumored that in the famous painting of Henry VIII, it was not a medallion around his neck, but a pocket watch he owned. While pocket watches were invented in the 16th century, it was not until the 17th century that they became more common & accurate.

A self-taught watchmaker by the name of John Harrison discovered that a precise reading of a ships longitude could only happen if you knew the exact time. At this point, Harrison decided that he needed to generate a watch that was far more accurate then what was available at that time. He worked for more then ten years to generate 4 versions of the Harrison Marine Chronometer. He presented his plate sized watch to the royal academy & had his chronometers tested by people like Captain Cook. Harrison’s Marine Chronometer went through plenty of trials & finally was accepted by the Queen who then paid him his prize money of 20,000 pounds.

Jacket History

Our bright jackets, as long as the Corps has been in existence, have proudly been a jogging advertisement for the Corps while worn on the backs of our teaching staffs, members, parents, & proud boosters. It is estimated that 1,200 jackets have been sold & worn throughout the years.

A yellow windbreaker jacket was produced in the late 1970’s & early ‘80’s & promoted our theme at that time, The jacket’s color was bright & garish. This jacket concept was an idea that did not take off. A black or white cotton jacket was also tried, but lacked definition. That also disappeared as the fad faded.

In 1973 a less expensive dark green nylon jacket with flock printing was developed & sold. It was dark & not eye-catching. The green satin jacket was more popular.

The jacket continues to prevail as our marketing focus. As our Pioneer Corps has evolved throughout the past 45 years, so have also some subtle changes that are remarkable to mention. The satin green jacket is actually a baseball jacket that is commonly worn by teams even today. The Corps’ original members came from low income families. So our task was to find an affordable jacket that had flash. Most corps at the time wore cotton jackets with embroidery on the back. The Cavaliers, who at that time hailed from Park Ridge California, had a green satin jacket, with a black stripe on the arm that also displayed an extensive amount of embroidery. They were, as they are today, one of corps’ elite groups. So for us, a St. Patrick green jacket was an obvious choice, however a bit expensive. The jacket cost $20.00 in 1964!

Lingerie

In the 18th century, French courtesans started to realize the potential appeal of undergarments which were designed to titillate the viewer. Most other members of society continued to wear plain lingerie in the form of corsets, petticoats, and slips. It wasn't until the 1960s that companies started to manufacture lingerie with specifically ornamental purposes in mind, alongside more conventional lingerie garments.

The word comes from a Latin word, lineus, which means “made from linen.” Lingerie was originally made from linen or cotton. Both men and women have worn an assortment of undergarments for hundreds of years. Most of the items linked with lingerie today, such as bras and panties, are actually relatively modern, however. Most lingerie up to the 18th century was designed to provide an extra layer of insulation, or to address hygienic and modesty issues. It tended to be simple, and often cumbersome in design.

Most modern lingerie falls in to four camps. The first consists of undergarments which are designed with function or modesty in mind. Slips and camisoles, for example, are intended to be worn under over garments. Foundation garments help to smooth the figure, while bras provide support and coverage to the chest. While plenty of of these garments may be stunning, their primary function is to be unseen. Plenty of nightclothes are designed to be warm and comfortable in bed or around the house, while house robes offer additional coverage. Cotton, flannel, and comfort fabrics are often employed in the creation of these garments.

The second section of lingerie is more racy. It consists of garments which are designed for show. Plenty of ornamental corsets, fancy bra and panty sets, and nightgowns fall in to this group. Short robes and dressy camisoles are also sewn with this in mind. Plenty of of these garments can also be worn underneath regular clothing, but they appear more frequently in the bedroom, and they are intended to spark interest in the wearer. Silk, lace, and synthetics are commonly used to make this type of lingerie.
